Ipsy Glam Bag Review - June 2014

Helloooo!

I've decided to do a review of my June 2014 Ipsy glam bag, which I received after work today. I'm the kind of person who rabidly stalks the mail, and follows the shipping notices like they're going to miraculously change every 5 seconds. Because Ipsy does a great job of sending out the Canadian bags pretty early, I generally get mine about a week after they start shipping. Of course, BECAUSE I have no self-control, and because I can't allow myself to be surprised, I already knew what I was receiving in my Glam Room.

Here is my bag, in all its glory.

And speaking of the bag, can we just stop to admire its mostly hidden glory for a moment? Teaming up with Rebecca Minkoff this month, Ipsy did an amazing job of creating a bag that I have a feeling I will use for years to come. The pattern is gorgeous, and it is legitimately something I could take out with me, without feeling like it's saying, "hey, look at me, I'm an ipsy makeup bag!" Awesome. The bag material itself is sturdy, not cheap feeling, and I noticed immediately how substantial the zipper felt. With some of the bags, you can tell that they feel, for lack of a better word, cheap. I don't think I've been this pleased with a bag since the December 2013 black bag with the lovely padded texture.

But yeah, enough about the bag. Apparently I'm a huge fan. Moving on to the products I received!

Let's start with the product I was most eager for - the NYX Butter Gloss! I already own two of these, in the shades Tiramisu and Cherry Cheesecake, a nude and a bright orange. This time around, I received the shade Apple Strudel, which is a very light coral, leaning more toward orange.

Perfect for summer! It looks great on its own, and tends to be very moisturizing (which is unusual for me, since I chronically apply lip balm under every single product). But how could I move on without mentioning the smell... mmmm. I've forced more people than I can count to smell this product, and most of the time I get the response I'm expecting. It smells amazing! If you're curious, do what I did, and go somewhere that sells the Butter Gloss - in my case, it was London Drugs, and just give 'em a sniff. You won't be disappointed.

The next item I received was the Mark Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray.

I can't say I was too excited about this, mainly because beach sprays tend to leave my hair kind of... blah. My hair is really thick, but also fine, so it gets weighed down easily by products like this. WITH that said, I am definitely going to give it a try on a day when I'm not working. The best part so far? It smells like pina coladas. Even if the product doesn't work well for me, I will still cherish the scent.

I also received the Be A Bombshell Lash Out mascara, which I am eager to try.

I know there were a lot of comments on the Facebook Ipsy page about the smell of the mascara, and yeah, it doesn't smell GREAT, but I don't honestly feel it's anything I'd get up in arms about. That's just me, other people can do what they want. I figure, if it works great, then I'll be happy, and if it doesn't, then I won't be too fussed. I've had great luck with the new L'oreal Manga mascara, so I'm not sure if this will be its replacement. Looking at the brush, it LOOKS nice, and the formula seems pretty wet, which can be hit or miss for me.

When I looked in my bag, I was really excited over the fact that I got the Nicka K Shimmer Eyeliner in Green - the other colour being sent out was a bright blue, and I knew that wouldn't work as well with my green eyes. I have a picture with swatches at the very bottom.

First off, when swatching this eyeliner, I noted that the brush is very firm and not flimsy at all. This could go either way around my eyes - it will either be too stiff and hurt to apply, or it will make me super happy because it keeps its shape over many uses. As you will see in a swatch picture below, the colour is GORGEOUS. I'm so excited to wear this, I think it will give me the perfect pop of colour for summer. It's also a very unique colour in my collection, almost a jade green, and the shimmer is not gaudy in the slightest.

My final item received is the SKINN Olive & Enzyme Cleanser. I was really excited when I saw I would be getting this, despite having never used it before! It seemed right up my alley, as it is quoted to be a "rich balm make-up remover & deep cleansing mask". Two of my favourite things, yay!

Because I have to smell literally everything, the first thing I did was take off the little silver sticker and sniff it. The scent reminded me of a creamsicle, which is delicious in my opinion. This makes sense, as it contains orange oil! I used it with my Clarisonic when taking off my makeup this evening, and I thought it did a great job, leaving behind a very light scent of oranges. The sample size is also 2.0oz, which is a really good size to me!

So yeah, there you have it! As you might be able to tell, I was a really big fan of this bag, and am looking forward to using all of the products I receive. To me, spending $15 ($10 + charges for being Canadian) or so feels completely worth it when I get to try all of these new products that I wouldn't have access to otherwise.

For my finale, here is a picture of the swatches I took!

As I'm sure you can tell, the far left is the Nicka K Green eyeliner, the middle is the Apple Strudel Butter Gloss, and the far right is the cleanser, in case you were curious about what it looked like.

I hope this was entertaining for anyone who took the time to read, and if you decide that Ipsy is something you might like to try, I would really appreciate it if you used my referral code: http://www.ipsy.com/r/1gg1

  1. I love that the ipsy bags for Canada are shipped first, but it still sucks to see all the Ontario girls get theirs and know that it will almost always be exactly 7 days until BC girls get theirs.

The bag is gorgeous! I used it as a clutch on a trip recently, and it worked great. So not an obvious cheap makeup bag.

Have you tried the eyeliner yet? I didn't get one in my bag, but I did have someone send me one, and the colour is gorgeous! It did stain really bad though. Like still there the next day. Was just wondering if you had that too since I don't know anyone else who got the green one.

  2. I know! I always obsessively stalk the mail, even though I always know what I'll be receiving. Us poor BC girls, haha.

As for the eyeliner, I've had a chance to try it, and I am obsessed with the colour. The brush is a little...pokey, for lack of a better word, so I have to be careful. And I agree, it stains like crazy, but I forgive it because it's so gorg.

Anything in the new spoilers you're looking forward to especially? :)

    1. I know what you mean by pokey. It's very stiff, but I like it. I seem to make less mess with it.

All the polish! I love when there are polish options, even if I never seem to end up with them.
